Christmas can be a difficult time for many of us. I remember when I was going through depression the last thing I wanted to do was spend time with anyone, let alone my extended family. It wasn’t because they were horrible, it was because I was unable to see the joy in spending time with them.
Here are my top 9 strategies to help you get through this “silly” and social season when you absolutely must socialize!
- BREATHE: Before you walk into the house, room, restaurant, where ever the gathering is, breathe. When we are stressed or anxious we can forget to breath and this lessens our ability to think clearly which means we are more likely to react rather than respond.
- ATTITUDE: Change your attitude about what you expect. If you expect the person to irritate you, they will. Change your thought pattern around this person. Visualize responding to the person in a calm, controlled manner. Visualize this person saying only pleasant things to you or keeping their distance. Be prepared not to react. Our brain perceives what we expect it to see so change what you expect to see.
- PLAN: Have an escape plan. If you catch yourself getting upset or irritated get up and leave the room. The toilet is a great place to hide for a few moments while you breathe and regain control over your emotions.
- STRATEGIC: Make sure you strategically sit next to the people you do like spending time with. Chat to these people. If you appear to be in deep conversation with someone, those that you don’t want to speak to will leave you alone.
- HELP: Get busy in the kitchen or helping out the host. It’s a great excuse to not get caught around someone you don’t want to speak to and the host will be more than grateful for the help.
- KIDS: Go outside and play with the kids or walk around with a toddler. It gets you away from the adult conversation and the kids will love you for it!
- CRYSTAL: Wear a protective crystal on your body somewhere. Jet, black and rainbow obsidian or black tourmaline are great protective stones to ensure your aura doesn’t absorb other people’s negativity.
- BUBBLE: Put a white protective bubble around you and know that this will only allow the positive energy into your vibration. Anything else will bounce away from you.
- CORDS: And when you leave, cut any cords to that person or situation while you are driving away, or as soon as you get home. There is no need to dwell on the negativity of the past or to hold onto it for the rest of the day (or the following day!)
Remember, this is a season for love, joy and giving but there are some that have real trouble feeling that at this time of year, so above all be understanding and compassionate.
Wishing you all a joyous festive season!
Until next time remember, happiness starts with a smile! ☺
